Using Affirmations Can Help Guide Our Paths
May 22, 2010

This week I discovered a hidden side-benefit of using affirmations. Anyone who has read much of my writing would know that I am a big fan of affirmations, and it was great to find another way that using them can be helpful in creating the life I truly want to live.

There is one thing I want to mention at this point. Constantly and actively working at shaping my life to align more and more with my dreams does not conflict with the fact that I am already living the life I choose, and that with all its ups and downs and challenges, I love my life. We can love our lives as they are now and have amazing visions of how they will develop.

To get back to what I have realized about using affirmations, it is that they can act as a powerful indicator of what is not working in our lives. A very good way to phrase affirmations is that we are creating whatever it is we want in our lives, in an easy and relaxed manner, in a healthy and positive way.

By using affirmations phrased in this manner, and staying tuned into our inner guidance, we will feel a strong discomfort when our physical reality is not aligned with what we are affirming. This discomfort tells us that we have veered off track, and that we need to gently adjust our course. This may involve making practical changes, like restructuring our time and priorities, or it may require trying new ways of doing things. Whatever the goals are that we are affirming, bringing ourselves mentally and physically in line with these affirmations allows us to feel balanced.

To be able to fulfill our goals in this type of healthy and positive manner is so important. If we are stressing ourselves out, and putting pressure on ourselves in order to try and reach our dreams, we are not only going to suffer mentally and physically, but we are also far less likely to be able to attain the results that we are seeking.

Have you ever had those days when you just felt like you were trying and trying to be productive, and the more you tried, the less you achieved and the more frustrated you became?

On the other hand, think of a time when you were feeling relaxed and rejuvenated from a holiday, a massage, exercise, or just a short break outside in a beautiful place. Feeling energized and renewed, you were able to effortlessly and joyfully achieve more in an hour or two of work than you could in the whole day of pushing yourself to get things done.

While there are obviously times when we do have to get things done to a certain schedule, there are many areas of our lives that contain more flexibility than we may believe. Many of our ‘deadlines’ and obligations are self-imposed.

Does it really matter if I don’t write anything on a day when the thing I really need to do is stop and recharge, and then the following day, feeling refreshed and full of ideas, sit down and write two articles just because I can? No, it doesn’t! If I did push myself to write when I needed a break, I would probably end up discarding or rewriting what I had written anyway, because it wouldn’t be much good.

If I truly was on a deadline though, I would at least be best off to take a couple of hours’ break to do something that I know would revitalize me, like having fun with my kids, even if that meant I would be working later in the day. It just isn’t smart trying to get blood out of a stone, and when we push ourselves too hard for too long, we can definitely begin to feel a bit stony.

The thing that using affirmations taught me this week is that by stating to myself frequently what things I want to be (and am) creating in my life, I can become quickly aware of what I am doing that is not working or matching up in some way.

If we are deeply in tune with the essence of the lives that we want, and need, to live, using affirmations can not only help us to create these lives, but act as a warning when we are going astray in the way that we are shaping and following our paths.

If you are using affirmations that don’t ring true to you on a soul-deep level, either you need to adjust your affirmations, or your actions and daily choices. When our inner and outer realities are in synch, we feel at ease with ourselves and the universe, and as always, the best guidance comes from within. We just need to learn and remember how to listen.
