Self-Help Gives You Tools For Personal Growth
Self-help is all about giving us the power to choose. We can choose to explore our options for a happier and healthier life, rather than remaining trapped and powerless. Seeking personal growth is something which has become hugely popular over the last couple of decades. As we have become more and more aware of the need to achieve balance and happiness in our lives, we have looked for ways to create these.
The concept of self-help is to find and take positive steps to improve our lives; mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. The great thing is that you don’t have to do it all by yourself. The resources available are endless. There are books, tapes, DVDs, websites, forums, and support groups for every aspect of personal growth. A commitment to improving your life and the use of helpful resources is a very powerful combination in making positive changes. Just the increased public awareness that happiness and emotional well-being are possible and desirable makes it much more likely for us to seek and find these things. Before self-help became a popular section in most bookshops, trying to understand your feelings and beliefs was considered very ‘new age’ and alternative. Soul searching was for hippies, and therapy was only for ‘crazy’ people. Things have certainly changed! These days you are just as likely to see an athlete, a CEO, or a grandmother with a book about positive thinking or managing emotional issues. Self-help has definitely made it into the main-stream of modern life. So how does it help? The very first step in changing anything is to become aware that a change is both needed and possible. Identify the problem. Accept that this is an area in your life that you are currently unhappy about. Try to figure out the causes. Resolve to take action to improve the situation. Find out about this issue, and the ways to handle it, by using relevant resources. Apply the techniques you discover. Connect with other people who are facing the same situation, either online, or physically. Another important part of helping yourself is knowing when to ask for help from others. Whether it is support and guidance from a trusted friend, or seeking professional help. Self-help does not mean you have to do it all yourself, by yourself. It just gives you the tools to choose a positive direction, and to empower yourself to make changes. It is not a quick fix either. Choosing happiness, emotional freedom, and personal growth is a lifelong quest. You cannot take a pill, read a book, or do a course, and achieve perfect happiness and enlightenment that will last your whole life. It is a journey, and sometimes a rocky one. To improve your life, you need to make a commitment to continuing to learn and grow. Maintain the progress that you have made and keep building on it. Personal growth is like physical fitness. If you get fit and then stop exercising you will lose your progress very quickly. It is the same with personal growth. You cannot stay still. If you are not moving forward, you are slipping back. Although self-help and personal growth are not quick or easy, the positive feelings and satisfaction your continued progress can give you are amazing. Just like physical exercise, personal growth gives a gradual increase of strength, flexibility, stamina, and energy. As you overcome obstacles and feel more positive about your life, you look better, you feel better, and you become more attractive to other people and to good things. Self-help can enable you to gain emotional freedom. You don’t have to feel helpless about difficulties and challenges. Whatever you are facing in your life, you are not alone. There is lots of help and support available, but first you need to make the choice to help yourself.
