A Real Alternative Can Always Be Found
A real alternative is what so many of us are longing for in various aspects of our lives, and when we cannot get a clear picture of what that alternative may be, it can be hard to trust that one exists. Too often we can find ourselves caught on the treadmill of more-better-best, or climbing ladders of achievement that we believe we should climb, regardless of whether or not those ladders actually lead us to somewhere we want to be. If you don’t feel good about a direction you are headed in right now, it can take a lot of courage to stop and realize that there is a real alternative. It can be much easier in some ways to believe that there is no alternative, because, at least on a surface level, this takes the responsibility off your shoulders. If you believe you have no choice, you don’t have to summon the courage needed to make changes. Making changes is something that many people have an absolute dread of, often to the degree that they would rather remain in circumstances that are making them miserable than to actively seek change. Other than the misery of staying in an unhappy situation, a serious pitfall to this way of thinking is that it can cause deep internal conflict. While you might manage to convince your conscious mind that you are truly not in control of your life and your choices, your subconscious mind or higher-self is not so easily fooled. On a deep level, we know when the things we are telling ourselves don’t ring true, and our souls will eventually begin to rebel if we keep trying to suppress them or force false, fear-based beliefs onto them. This rebellion of our souls or higher-selves against being confined in a prison of limiting beliefs can result in various scenarios. The results depend largely on how often and easily we check in with our higher-selves to see if the way we are thinking and living is in tune with our deep inner knowing. These days, I usually find that I can quickly spot feelings of imbalance and discomfort that let me know some adjustments are needed in my thinking or my actions. In the past, however, I often had to reach a serious crisis point before I stopped striding along whatever path I was on to begin honestly facing up to what wasn’t working and looking for a real alternative. Taking responsibility for the current circumstances of your life may be challenging, but it is also empowering. Accepting that there is always a real alternative in any situation we face means that we have the ability, as well as the responsibility, to choose a better way. If we deny this ability to always find a better way, and refuse to accept the responsibility for creating our present and our future, we are choosing to stay trapped in whatever current reality we find ourselves in. You may not know yet what new direction would give you that sense of rightness that is currently lacking. This can keep many people pounding the pavement that they are on, feeling that they must keep moving or else. If you sense that the path you are on in any area of your life is not quite right for you, but you don’t know what adjustments would make it right, the best real alternative is to slow down and give yourself time. You do not need to keep pushing yourself in a direction that is causing you to feel uneasy. On the other hand, you don’t need to leap off that path either, because it could be that only some minor adjustments are needed to get back on course. Take time to relax and do some soul-searching. No matter how busy our lives can become, this is so important. Do an activity you love, exercise, get out in nature, read inspirational books or articles, write in a journal, play or listen to music, talk to someone who can uplift your spirit. These things can help us gain insight into what areas of our lives need adjusting, and the possible ways that these adjustments could be made. There is always a real alternative that can make our lives more joyful. We just need to find the courage and take the time to really look, and believe that we can, and deserve, to be happy.
