Creating a Purpose Driven Life

A purpose driven life is one lived with the solid underlying conviction that we are here for a reason, and understanding and embracing that reason in all its aspects. Developing a purpose centered existence can provide a sense of clarity, empowerment, and inner peace as we go about our lives. This is a powerful antidote to finding ourselves overinvested mentally and emotionally in life’s day to day duties and dramas.By constructing, fine tuning, and then regularly fueling our sense of purpose, we are able to live our lives with greater energy and focus. Creating and living a purpose driven life is like building and maintaining a magnificent and powerful vehicle. We first need to assemble the basic components, and put them in working order.
When our vehicles of purpose are roadworthy, we then need to make certain that we keep them running smoothly and efficiently. We do this by frequently attending to the wear and tear created by the potholes in our daily lives. This maintenance can be achieved by spending time reconnecting with what is truly important in our lives, through quiet reflection, journaling, reading, using affirmations, and connecting with like-minded people for support and encouragement. Initially, though, let’s look at the elements that are needed to build an authentic and balanced purpose driven life. There are many aspects to having a true sense of purpose, and we need to create a full and balanced understanding of what these elements are. Developing a rounded sense of purpose enables us to enjoy fully all the aspects of our lives. Too often, the idea of a purpose driven life is equated with a driven life. Being driven tends to refer to the feeling of pressure to be always in action, always striving, and never arriving. This is also often related purely to material success, and neglects the importance of living a complete and rounded life. If we become too single-minded in our concept of purpose, it is very easy to fall into the trap of becoming driven or obsessive. My personal belief is that we are all here with the same primary fundamental purpose, and that this purpose can be summed up in the following nine words. Live, love, laugh, cry, learn, grow, express, give, receive. A true purpose driven life is one where we can let go of the need to control everything around us and the need for our lives and circumstances to fit a certain formula. Instead, we can embrace the true reason and meaning in our lives, and allow this meaning to empower our existence. If the primary focus of your life is to learn and grow as a human being, to experience fully every new situation and encounter that life brings you, to form genuine and fulfilling connections with others (and most importantly with your own inner self), and to explore, express, and seek to understand the range of human emotions, how can your life ever be anything other than purposeful? One important aspect to creating a purpose driven life is to allow the full discovery and expression of our gifts and talents. We are born with particular abilities and creative urges, and the things that we love to do, that spark our passion, and catch our attention are the things that we need to express in order to create a full and joyful life. It is also in discovering, nurturing, and expressing these creative urges that we discover how to construct another very important facet of a purpose driven life. While simply expressing our particular talents is truly important to a happy and full life, it is also vital that we find a way of using these talents to give to others in some way. We are born to give and receive love and energy, and in order to allow ourselves to be a part of this stream of wonderful energy, we must develop our ability to contribute value to those around us by utilizing our highest skills. It is equally important that we nurture our ability to receive in order to allow a flow of love and energy into our lives. We need to forget about some of the things that we have been taught along the lines of it being greedy and selfish to receive, or that it is ‘better to give than to receive.’ If this were true, then the flow of giving and receiving would not exist. There can be no giving without receiving, and if it were truly better to give than to receive, whenever we gave to others, we would be automatically putting them in an inferior position in the fact that they were the receivers. The truth of the matter is that it is equally wonderful to give and to receive. They are two sides of the one coin of sharing and loving, and a key to living a truly purpose driven life is to open ourselves up fully to both. One way that we must develop or skills in both giving and receiving is in our relationship with ourselves. Practice giving yourself what you need to be happy, healthy, and to thrive, and then receive from yourself joyfully and gratefully. Receive from yourself, the Universe, and those around you with an open heart and mind, and then give from a place of abundance, sharing, and joy. Creating a true purpose driven life allows us to put forth our best and highest efforts in everything we do, while feeling motivated, fulfilled, and joyful.
