My Way Out

Finding my way out of the traps of fear, conformity, and limiting thinking is a work in progress. On some counts, I have really shaken off the restraints, but there are many areas in which I am still working on finding my way.

If you feel that you are not experiencing the freedom in your life that you would like to have, take the time to really look at what is holding you back.

Most often, the things that we need to break free from are our own beliefs and habits.

Human beings are definitely creatures of habit and some of us even more than others. We tend to crave comfort and familiarity, even if we know the familiar things are making us miserable. To break free takes a firm decision that you will change your life, and a commitment to doing whatever it takes.

Often, we don’t make this kind of decision and commitment to change what’s not working in our lives until circumstances have reached the stage of being unbearable. This is what we mean when we talk about the straw that broke the camel’s back. We go on putting up with undesirable situations, and postponing taking the challenge of changing things until that ‘final straw’ forces us to face things.

I don’t know about you, but I would rather find my way out of situations that aren’t working without a broken back! These days, when something in my life feels like it is not working, or is holding me back, I try to take action to find my way out before I reach breaking point.

This was not always the case though, in my 20s, I put up with many things in my life that didn’t make me happy. It did, in fact, take a very big ‘straw,’ in the form of my mother’s death from cancer, to make me really wake up to the way things were in my life. Although that was a very difficult and painful time, it was the time that I began to find my way out of a life that was far from the (mostly) joyful life I live today.

Whether you are at breaking point, or just aware that there are certain aspects of your life that need to be changed, decide to make those changes.

When you have decided to follow your heart, tune into your intuition for guidance on what steps to take. If you get still and really listen, you will find that your inner knowing can provide all the guidance you need. It is just a matter of making a decision, and a commitment to listen. Being the creatures of habit that we are, you will need to make that decision again and again, as your ingrained beliefs and habits sway you off your new course, back to the rut.

When I need to find my way out of difficult situations, I find that my best tools are pretty consistent. I am devoted to using affirmations, creative visualization, stilling my mind, physical exercise, reading inspiring books or articles, and writing about my thoughts and feelings. With these methods, and a commitment to following my heart, finding my way out of anything that isn’t working in my life can be done.

If you are ready to find your way out of fear, negative thinking, or unhappy circumstances, trust that you can. Your heart is ready to show you the way if you are willing to follow.
