March 20, 2010Last week I had the privilege of being a guest on Steve Toth’s Mind Body Soul Show. Steve is a fantastic guy and the radio network he started four years ago, Real Coaching Radio Network, is hugely popular and offers some great programs. I had a great time chatting to Steve about choosing-life-my-way.com and the work that I am passionate about doing. To listen to the interview, just right click on this link. Select 'Open Link in New Window,' or 'Open Link in New Tab.' Then choose what program you want to use to open the MP3 file (Windows Media Player usually works fine for this.)
Steve asked about the topic of my first book, ‘Freedom from Shame,’ and the fact that helping others to overcome the stigma of depression is one of my passions. We discussed the condition of depression, and the shame that can often accompany it. I explained to Steve that when I first started to really confront the fact that depression was an issue in my life, I sought to learn and understand as much as I could. As well as being depressed, I felt having depression meant I was in some way weak, flawed, and inferior, and I realized that overcoming this sense of shame was vital to my recovery. At that time, I found that there was a lack of resources relating to the stigma of depression, so I decided to write my own book. Steve then asked me about another topic which is very close to my heart- transracial adoption. Adopting three incredible children from Taiwan is the way that I became a mother, and it is the best thing that I have ever done. I love being a mother, and my experiences of adopting led me to publish my second book. The title is ‘Not My Flesh and Blood, but My Heart and Soul.’ This is how I feel about my children- they are a part of me on a level that is hard to imagine, even though we share no genes. In writing this book, I really wanted to share my experiences, and especially my realization that biology is only one way of being related. The remainder of my time on the Mind Body Soul program focused on the key topics of my website, and why I created the site. Steve and I talked about the choices that are always available to us, and how even not choosing is a choice in itself. We talked about embracing our differences, following our hearts, and listening to our intuition. We agreed that love is really the most important thing in life, and ended the show marveling about how technology enabled us to be in the same studio despite being on opposite sides of the globe. I greatly appreciate the commitment that Steve has to creating a positive network, and I want to thank him again for having me on the show. A big thanks also to Nan at RCRN. Steve and Nan, you are awesome. Keep doing what you are doing!!
