An Inspiration Patchwork Uses Insight
from a Rainbow of Sources

April 28, 2010

Crafting an Inspiration Patchwork An inspiration patchwork is created by taking pieces of beautiful, powerful, challenging, uplifting, or inspiring insight from many varied sources. There are so many resources available to us on our journey through life, and a key to getting the best out of as many of these as possible is to use our own inner guidance to take in only what rings true to us on a deep level.

With anything I read or hear, if there is just one single sentence that strikes a chord with me and in some way gives me what I need at that moment, it is an amazing gift. Taking just a single idea from something doesn’t mean that the rest of the material is defunct. There may be many other ideas that will resonate with me on other occasions, and if not with me, then with other people.

There are books I bought years ago that continue to give me something new each time I feel an urge to read them. We are all free to take snippets, as and when we choose, from the offerings that are provided by our fellow human beings and the universe itself to craft our own inspiration patchwork, and to make it as unique as we are ourselves.

I have a mental library of bits of wisdom that I have collected over the years, and I treasure this ‘library’ as much as I do my shelves of books, and my list of bookmarked Internet sites. With these mental, physical, and virtual collections, I can tap into a wonderful array of resources at any time.

I often think of my high school motto which was a Latin phrase translating to ‘each man is the maker of his own fortune.’ I wholeheartedly believe this, and I am grateful that even as a teenager, I was given access to wisdom that would stay with me. My personal inspiration patchwork is a magnificent work in progress, and I am always on the lookout for beautiful scraps that I can add to it.

There are so many amazing and inspiring people who are putting their insight, understanding, and unique perspective out into the world in various forms. These forms include, but are in no way limited to, writing books, blogs, and articles, hosting inspiring shows on radio, Internet, and television, giving seminars and workshops, and working with individuals in counseling, coaching, teaching, and healing capacities.

There are many, many people who have had an impact on my life and my path to date. Some of these people have made an enormous difference to me at various times in a very direct way, such as a couple of wonderful therapists who have worked with me at different times. Many other times I have gained enormous help, encouragement, insight, or perspective through written or recorded materials.

In the case of personal interaction with teachers, mentors, counselors, or wise friends, as well as when reading or listening to inspirational materials, it is important to be aware that we don’t have to agree with everything someone says or does in order to gain valuable insight, inspiration, or learning from them.

The best therapist or the most accomplished writer is just a human being like you and me. They have their strengths and weaknesses, they have their own personal history and belief system, and we do not have to accept everything they say word for word.

Read and listen with an open mind, an open heart, but with a firm belief that you are the only final authority on what you choose to believe and accept. Take what feels right to you and just leave what doesn’t. If anyone is offended by you picking and choosing from their offerings, then they are trying to force their own values and ideals on you, and a polite and firm ‘no thanks,’ is in order.

Listen to your heart while you feast your eyes on the incredible array of beautiful materials that are at your fingertips, and craft your inspiration patchwork into something you can truly treasure.
