honesty quotes

Honesty quotes can help us gain perspective and clarity about honesty. While we may have been brought up to adhere to honesty being the best policy, in our quest to live consciously, kindly and truthfully, it is important to consider the shades of gray that are inherent in life and in honesty.

Some honesty quotes advocate that honesty is indeed important in the areas of overcoming difficulties, achieving success, and creating loving relationships.
“Almost any difficulty will move in the face of honesty. When I am honest I never feel stupid. And when I am honest I am automatically humble.” Hugh Prather

“Honesty is the most single most important factor having a direct bearing on the final success of an individual, corporation, or product.” Ed McMahon

“Honesty does not always bring a response of love, but it is absolutely essential to it.” Ray Blanton

Other honesty quotes reflect on ways of attaining and practicing real honesty. This quote from Lao Tzu suggests that we can only truly possess qualities such as honesty when we are able to display them unconditionally. He says, “Be honest to those who are honest, and be also honest to those who are not honest. Thus honesty is attained.”

In this quote, Arthur Dobrin tells us that honesty and kindness need not be mutually exclusive. “There is always a way to be honest without being brutal.”

The following honesty quotes focus on the nature of honesty, and how we can enhance our ability to interact authentically with life and those around us.

Michel de Montaigne tells us that our assurance in the good qualities, such as honesty, possessed by others reflects the presence of these qualities in ourselves. He says “Confidence in others' honesty is no light testimony of one's own integrity.”

According to Meredith Monk, honesty comes from deep within. “That inner voice has both gentleness and clarity. So to get to authenticity, you really keep going down to the bone, to the honesty, and the inevitability of something.”

Khalil Gibran states that, “Truth is a deep kindness that teaches us to be content in our everyday life and share with the people the same happiness.”

Some honesty quotes address the fact that there are always gray areas in life, and that truth is often highly subjective. Just as there is no one right way to live our lives, there is no one absolute truth, as this quote from Khalil Gibran suggests; “Say not, 'I have found the truth,' but rather, 'I have found a truth’.”

Albert Einstein tells us, “Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods.”

According to Maya Angelou, “There's a world of difference between truth and facts. Facts can obscure the truth,” and Oscar Wilde says, “The truth is rarely pure and never simple.”

Friedrich Nietzsche goes so far as to say that “Convictions are more dangerous foes of truth than lies.”

These final honesty quotes follow the idea of it being better to be kind than to be right. In seeking to be truthful and authentic, it is also important to question whether telling “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” is indeed accurate, necessary, and helpful.

Anthony Trollope offers these words; “There are worse things than a lie... I have found... that it may be well to choose one sin in order that another may be shunned.” Robert Brault says, “Today I bent the truth to be kind, and I have no regret, for I am far surer of what is kind than I am of what is true.”

In conclusion, as we seek to understand the principles of honesty, and apply them to our lives, we are well served in remembering that the ultimate way of knowing what is good, right, and true for us in any moment comes from the guidance within us if we will take time to listen.
