Forgiveness quotes can help us to understand the importance of forgiveness in creating our own emotional freedom and wellbeing. While we are holding on to anger and resentment, we can never be free of the experiences or even the people that our anger is directed towards. We remain trapped in a prison of pain and negativity, and are unable to move freely and openly into the joyous future that we desire.
Although it sometimes feels like forgiving someone is doing them a favor that we believe they do not deserve, it is in fact really for our own benefit that we must forgive. Forgiveness does not mean approving or condoning that which is unacceptable. It simply means being willing to let go of the suffering that we continue to experience if we choose to remain angry.
Some forgiveness quotes recognize the fact that while forgiving is so important, it can be hard to do. These quotes can help us to appreciate the courage we show in being willing to forgive, and to find the strength within us to do so.
“Forgiveness is not always easy. At times, it feels more painful than the wound we suffered, to forgive the one that inflicted it. And yet, there is no peace without forgiveness.” Marianne Williamson
“It takes courage and commitment to act in a more forgiving fashion. It is not at all a sign of weakness but a mark of strength.” Carl Thorensen
“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” Mohandas Gandhi
Other forgiveness quotes emphasize the fact that forgiveness is, as Suzanne Somers says, “the gift you give yourself,” and that if you do not decide and learn to forgive, the only person you really punish is yourself.
“Forgiveness is almost a selfish act because of its immense benefits to the one who forgives.” Lawana Blackwell
“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” Lewis B. Smedes
The following forgiveness quotes focus on the nature of forgiveness. Gerald Jampolsky sums it up by saying that, “Forgiveness means letting go of the past.” Alice Duer Miller states that, “Genuine forgiveness does not deny anger but faces it head-on.” This is a powerful formula for forgiveness; to face and feel the anger, and then to make a conscious and loving decision to let go of it along with the events of the past.
The next two forgiveness quotes address the fact that forgiveness is all about the future. The past is the past, and we cannot affect what has already taken place, but in our present choices, we shape the future. Bernard Meltzer speaks of the power of forgiveness to influence the future in the following words: “When you forgive, you in no way change the past - but you sure do change the future.” Desmond Tutu goes so far as to say that the future is dependent on our willingness to forgive. He says, “Without forgiveness, there's no future.”
These final forgiveness quotes seek to explain what forgiveness feels like (in addition to the feeling of being released from jail, that is!). Peter Allen says, “Forgiveness is a funny thing, it warms the hearts and cools the sting.”
Clarissa Pinkola Estes offers the following description of forgiveness: “How does one know if she has forgiven? You tend to feel sorrow over the circumstance instead of rage, you tend to feel sorry for the person rather than angry with him. You tend to have nothing left to say about it all.”
If anger and resentment are keeping you stuck in the pain of the past, let the wise words of these forgiveness quotes help you find the courage to give yourself the gift of forgiveness. In doing so, you can begin to move freely into your joyful future with a light and open heart.
