Developing Intuition - Learning to Trust Your Inner Knowing

Developing intuition can make a huge difference in the way we live our lives. It can allow us to make choices from the wisdom of our hearts, rather than trying to use logic to decide the course of action that would be best for us at any given moment. The problem with relying too much on logic, and our rational minds, to make choices is that we can never know for certain what the outcome of any action will be. In fact, we create a lot of stress and anxiety by trying to predict every possible scenario that may result from a decision. Regardless of what we decide in the present moment, we cannot know what will happen in the future. By accepting this, we can free ourselves from the trap of endless speculation and the false belief that we need to know what we cannot know.
Developing intuition can enable us to get in touch with the part of our beings that simply knows what feels right. This inner knowing will guide us to take the path that is for our highest good if we learn to listen, and to trust that our intuition will not lead us astray. Intuition can also act as a warning system at any point along a course of action. If something is making you feel uneasy, it is a signal that either your actions, or your thoughts, are not in line with your inner knowing. Ignoring your intuition can result in a feeling of being out of step with yourself.
Instead of searching outside ourselves for answers to questions and situations that we experience in our daily lives, we can learn to find all the answers we need within us. Too many of us are inclined to believe that everyone else knows more than we do, and we often spend vast amounts of time seeking the advice and opinions of others, only to find ourselves even more confused and uncertain. In fact, the real knowing and wisdom about the right way for each one of us to live is something that we are all born with. Unfortunately, from early childhood, most of us are taught that we must do things according to what other people believe, or what society dictates. These handed-down beliefs often stifle or even smother the wisdom and knowing that we begin with as infants. A major part of developing intuition involves removing all the layers of beliefs and conditioning that we have accumulated from childhood, in order to uncover our inner truth. Learning to believe and trust that you are the ultimate, in fact, the only, authority on how to live your life is one of the most important things that developing intuition can achieve. Developing intuition also allows us to more effectively make use of the many resources that are available to us as we seek to live happy and productive lives. When we can easily tune into our inner knowing, we can readily recognize which ideas, suggestions, books, or articles are just what we need at any particular moment. Anything that doesn’t feel right at that moment can be easily put aside for a future time, or simply let go. Our intuition can also point us in the directions which will lead us to whatever we need at any given time. By developing intuition, we learn to listen to the whispers of our souls which are too often ignored or drowned out by the louder voices of our rational minds, or the opinions and beliefs of others around us. By taking small steps to begin honoring your inner wisdom, you will gradually increase your ability to hear and trust your intuition. If you have a strong urge to do something, go somewhere, or call someone, follow it. It may not lead to anything remarkable, but often, you will find that the friend you called ‘just happens’ to mention something that gives you insight into exactly what you need at that moment. Like any other skill, ability, or strength, one of the keys to developing intuition is to keep at it. If you have spent many years listening to your logical mind, or the opinions of others, and ignoring the wisdom of your soul, you can’t expect to become an instant whiz at trusting your intuition. Be patient and persistent. Try not to become discouraged that your life doesn’t change dramatically overnight. Look for the small signs or feelings that you are on the right path to developing intuition, and be gentle with yourself. Once you begin, you will find that you gain momentum and the feelings of rightness that come from living life in tune with your inner wisdom build on each other. Your skill in listening to your intuition, as well as your ability to trust in what you hear, will blossom.
