Depression Quotes for Insight
and Encouragement

Depression quotes can help us through the debilitating experience that depression can be. Wise words about depression allow us to gain greater understanding or a different perspective on the condition, know that we are not alone, and catch a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Some of these quotes also offer helpful insight on ways of dealing with depression which can assist us in finding our way to a better feeling place.

These first depression quotes focus on the nature of the state of depression, and the fact that it is a potentially devastating, but treatable, medical condition.

“Just like other illnesses, depression can be treated so that people can live happy, active lives.” Tom Bosley

“A lot of people don't realize that depression is an illness. I don't wish it on anyone, but if they would know how it feels, I swear they would think twice before they just shrug.” Jonathan Davis

The depression quotes that follow help us to understand the effects of depression, and how it manifests in our experience. Rollo May describes depression as “the inability to construct a future.” It is certainly true that in the depths of an episode of depression, it can feel quite impossible to imagine life ever being or feeling any different from the way it is at that moment. Michael Schenker states that, “Depression is something that makes you lose your sight,” and Dr. Wayne Dyer says, “Depression is inertia.”

At such times, it can help to remind ourselves that “this too shall pass,” and even though we may not be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel at that moment, our own experience, and that of others, shows us that we will emerge eventually, and sometimes the best thing to do is to just wait it out. It is also very helpful to trust in the fact that even though we feel far from okay, on a deep level, we are always okay, and that we will feel more okay again in the future, as we have in the past.

Other depression quotes suggest ways of getting through the tough times, and strategies that have worked for others that may also help us.

“Art saved me; it got me through my depression and self-loathing, back to a place of innocence.” Jeanette Winterson

“The best cure for worry, depression, melancholy, brooding, is to go deliberately forth and try to lift with one's sympathy the gloom of somebody else.” Arnold Benett

In my own experience, creative pursuits can definitely offer relief, distraction, and healing energy when in a place of despair, and focusing on being of benefit to others can also be a good way of raising our own spirits. One more thing that I would add to these suggestions is exercise. The mood-elevating power of exercise has been enormously important to me in managing depression and creating and maintaining a healthy and positive outlook.

Some depression quotes aim to shed some light on the potential benefits that we can gain from the experience of depression; an experience that none of us would ever choose. The fact is though, we all face challenges in our lives, and the choice that we can make is whether or not we will take whatever learning and growth we can from these challenges. As Chuck T. Falcon says, “Trials give you strength, sorrows give understanding and wisdom.” Depression can increase our level of understanding and empathy, both for the suffering of others, and for ourselves, if we allow it to.

Richard Marx offers these inspiring words, illustrating that depression doesn’t have to mean permanent misery, and that dark periods can even provide inspiration. He says,”I'm happy, I would say that I'm one of the happiest people I know but I've certainly had periods of profound sadness, depression and heartache and those are the kind of things that are interesting to me to write about.”

When facing tough periods in our lives, we can take comfort from knowing that not only are we not alone, but as these depression quotes show, some truly inspiring people have been there too, and come through with words of encouragement to share.
