A Clear Head Lets Us Choose With Clarity

A clear head is important in choosing to follow your heart. If your mind is clouded with expectations and negative thoughts, you will not have the clarity to distinguish your intuition from your internal chatter. Talking about being clear-headed in the same sentence as talking about listening to your intuition may sound contradictory, but it isn’t. Your intuition comes from a deep place of inner knowing, but the trick is hearing it- it doesn’t shout, it whispers. If you are so busy listening to the endless commentary that your mind creates you will not hear the gentle voice of your soul. It is also vital to have a clear head when making decisions. Making the right choices in life needs logic as well as faith. Sometimes the feeling that is urging you to take a certain path is not the coaxing of your heart, but rather the tugging of fear or insecurity.
You may believe that you are following your heart by choosing to stay in a miserable relationship because you love your partner. Whether or not you love them is not the issue; I don't doubt that you do. But by staying in a relationship that hurts you, you are not showing enough love and respect for yourself. It is all too easy to fall in love with someone, and not so easy to live with the consequences in some cases. There are times that we should try to use our mental clarity to overrule our emotions, especially when instincts tell us that we are likely to get hurt by falling for a certain person. Those are the times when you should follow your head rather than your heart, because, for whatever reasons, your heart is drawn in a direction that your head knows won't make you happy. The right choice is often not the easy one, but it is the choice that you know will bring you closer to a place of happiness and fulfillment, and will not cause you needless suffering. Our hearts are frequently clouded by all sorts of human emotions, and are particularly vulnerable to fear. This can mean that sometimes, when you feel that you are following your heart, you are actually being controlled by fear. This may be a fear that you are not good enough, don’t deserve to be happy, or a fear that there is not enough of everything good in life, and that you must grasp what you can, while you can. A choice that we think feels right could just be the choice that is easiest. We tend to have a natural resistance to anything that is difficult or takes a little effort. Choosing to lie on the couch rather than go to the gym is not a case of following your heart. It is giving in to a very common trait called laziness! And who isn’t guilty of that from time to time? If you aren’t, you are a much more self-disciplined person than I am! Having a clear head helps you distinguish between the choice that is in line with your true desires and goals, and the choice that you would be making by following your emotions or your habits. Meditation is one of the best ways to increase clarity, but if you are like me (a working parent with an attention span about as long as my three-year-old son’s), don’t be put off by the thought of having to sit motionless for hours with a totally still mind. Some of the best forms of meditation can be done while undertaking everyday activities, such as cleaning or cooking. By shifting your focus onto the details of what you are doing, and also onto your breathing, you can create a moving meditation. The whole point is to stop the constant internal chatter in your mind, to allow yourself to gain clarity- even if only for a few minutes. If it is especially difficult for you to still your mind, try repeating a calming phrase or word while you exercise, drive, or do the shopping. This gives your mind something to focus on and replaces the inner monologue with something that is healing and positive. Having a clear head comes from practice, repetition, and training. Start small, but do start learning to empty your mind of the trivia that it tends to be filled with. Cultivate clarity by focusing on stillness of mind, and releasing fears, doubts, and worries. By bringing clarity to your mind, you will bring clarity and a sense of purpose to your life. To be open to all the miracles that life has to offer, we need to clear space in our heads and our hearts to receive the opportunities that are all around us. A clear head is like an empty vase, waiting to receive the most beautiful flowers of truth and understanding. Sweep away all the junk in your life, and prepare the canvas of your mind and your heart for the masterpiece that your intuition can help you create.
