Your Perfect Career Path Can Lead In Many Directions
Your perfect career path is the path that allows you to do work that makes you feel challenged and alive. The right career for you is a career that uses your special talents and gifts. This doesn’t have to be a particular job, or necessarily even a job. You can follow your life purpose through paid employment, running a business, volunteering, doing creative work, or raising a family. Think about your career path for a moment, and where you are on that path today. Where is it leading you? It doesn’t matter how you started on that path, or what twists and turns, ups and downs it has taken. What is important is where you are headed on your career path, and how much you are enjoying the journey. Are you doing work you like; work that makes you feel satisfied and challenged? Work that is using your unique gifts and talents? A job that is making a contribution to other people, animals, or the world you live in? If the answer is ‘yes,’ then congratulations! You are on the right career path and it doesn’t matter where it takes you, the path is paved with satisfaction and fulfillment. It is not the destination that is important, but the journey, and it is wonderful to hear of people who are following their hearts and making a living at the same time. If you are not doing work that is in line with your dreams and talents, don’t beat yourself up about it. The majority of the world’s population is in the same boat. The advantage that you have over most other people is that you are becoming aware that this is not the only choice, and that you do have other alternatives. It is never too late to begin shifting towards a career direction that uses your gifts and gives you joy and satisfaction. Most people drift along their career paths their whole lives without really stopping to question why they are doing the jobs they are doing, or whether they should or could change direction. Even the way that many people choose a career is a recipe for unhappiness. They take a job that offers a high salary, prestige, or ‘benefits,’ but don’t stop to think about what all this is costing them. Other people fall into a career, because they take the first opportunity that comes along, and then feel obliged to keep following that path. Some people make career choices based on what their parents want for them, and become trapped in living their lives by other people’s expectations. If you have become aware that you are not on the path that follows your heart, that is fantastic! This is the first and biggest step to changing the course of your career, and making positive career choices. Next, take some time to think about what you would like to be doing. Forget about practicalities. Just figure out what you would really like to spend your days doing, if education, opportunity, and money were not a question. Find the essence of the job you would like to have. It is not important to label or define the job. Your ideal job may not even exist yet. I would never have thought that creating a website about choosing a different path would be my perfect career, but I cannot imagine a job that would be better suited to my skills, experience, and passions. By figuring out the essence of what I wanted to do, I literally fell into doing this- courtesy of Steve Pavlina and Site Build It ! Once you can get clear on what skills you want to use in your career, and what tasks you most enjoy doing, you will find your subconscious and your heart will gently begin guiding you towards opportunities that will provide you with the chance to begin doing the things you truly want to do. This will probably be in a small way to start with, and that is as it should be. To suddenly land in a full-time full-fledged career that fulfills every aspect of your goals and desires would be overwhelming for most of us. It is also very likely that you will need to develop certain skills, attitudes, and habits to eventually have the career of your dreams. Starting little by little gives you a chance to gain experience and confidence. It allows you to gradually and purposefully begin following the career path that is truly right for you. Rather than sprinting off in a new direction, take your time. Explore the highways and byways that lead in the direction of your dreams, and you will slowly and surely begin creating the career that is perfect for you.
