10 Ways to Overcome Fear

This article (with accompanying video) of 10 ways to overcome fear shares practical tips for understanding, healing, and releasing the fears that can keep us feeling trapped and powerless.

The first two of the 10 ways to overcome fear focus on our direct relationship to the fear, and looking at the fear in a different light.

  1. Go deeper into the fear. When we are afraid, we tend to become mentally, emotionally and physically frozen, and feel unable to take action. We are poised in that moment before the ‘flight or fight’ response that we know on a conscious level is not rational, but is so instinctively conditioned. One way to overcome fear is to look the fear in the eyes, and to keep asking yourself what you are really afraid of. In most cases, fear has many levels, and we are usually only aware of the external level. Take for example the fear of public speaking. The external level of fear is very easy to see and feel, but going deeper can lead to an understanding of the core fears and beliefs, such as fearing a loss of love and respect. In discovering these core beliefs, it then becomes possible to work and healing and releasing the cause, rather than the symptoms of the issue.

  2. Focus on love rather than fear. Connect with the Divine that flows through you, and allow the power of love to radiate through your being. Remind yourself that fear is simply an absence of love, just as darkness is an absence of light. When we turn on a light, the darkness simply cannot exist. Likewise, if we can illuminate our fear with pure love, the fear cannot help but vanish.

The next two of the 10 ways to overcome fear offer practical tips on how to increase our tolerance for, and reduce the intensity of the thing we fear.

  1. Little by little increase your tolerance for the subject of your fear. Overcoming fears, big or small, can be done by gradually tackling the tasks or situations that we fear, and thereby, developing trust in ourselves that we can do it- fear and all. It is important to take baby steps, and to steadily build up courage and confidence by facing your fears in small ways at first.

  2. Educate yourself about the subject of your fear. Fear is often created by the unknown, and there is no better cure for that knowledge and understanding.

The following two of the 10 ways to overcome fear relate to methods of healing, releasing and transforming fears.

  1. Use EFT tapping to overcome fear. EFT works by tapping on acupressure points on the meridians (energy pathways) of the body to release emotional blockages. Tapping on these points while focusing on a specific belief or issue that is causing us distress or difficulty can free the blocked energy and allow healing.

  2. Use affirmations to overcome fear. Affirmations can be used to overcome fear by creating new and empowering beliefs. This leads to being able to release fears, and embrace new ways of thinking and feeling.

The final four of the 10 ways to overcome fear include practice methods for calming and transforming fear, making positive life changes to reduce the power of fear in our lives, and seeking Divine support in overcoming fear.

  1. Focus on your breathing using a self-hypnosis technique. Take deep breaths, and count down as you exhale slowly, from 50 to 1. When you reach one, continue repeating 1 several times, feeling all the fear and tension being released from your body.

  2. Build your trust and confidence in yourself. A solid sense of self esteem can help greatly in overcoming fear. When you trust that you are able to handle whatever challenges come your way, fear has a way of losing much of its power.

  3. Pray. Ask for support from your Higher Power in overcoming your fears, and in developing trust and confidence. Affirmative prayers along the lines of ‘I am so grateful for your strength and power which flow through me. With your Divine support, I allow my fear to dissolve and evaporate, leaving in its place peace, joy, love, trust, and confidence.’ One of the greatest causes of fear is feeling a sense of disconnection from our higher selves, and with the Divine source of life of which we are an inseparable part.

  4. Use Visualization Exercises. One way to do this is picturing yourself as vividly as possible in the situation that you fear, completely calm, capable and confident. Another type of visualization involves creating a mental picture in which you symbolically release the fear. An example of this is to see yourself with a balloon. Place the balloon to your lips and begin exhaling all your fear into the balloon. When the balloon is full, tie it up, and release it. Watch it drift up into the sky, higher and higher and further away until it is out of sight. Feel the lightness of having released your fear.
